 The SABC myTomorrow exhibition is an initiative aimed at targeting grade 10-12 learners on all technical careers for those that our school leavers embark on especially for those that cannot get a university degree.

The SABC has partnered with the Department of Education, the Department of Higher Education and the National Youth skills development programme to make sure that this is event is a platform for students and an industry to meet, network and a crucial platform of communication with regards to exchanging information.

''Science, mathematics and technology can lead to building great careers but the youth are largely uninformed about the exciting, lucrative technical careers waiting for them out there and what they need to achieve at school in order to successfully embark on a career as an artisan, technician or engineer. The technical careers expo is a platform for learners with technical aptitude to access information about available learnerships, training opportunities and requirements,'' said Danie Swart, marketing manager at SABC Education.

HERITAGE DAY

WHAT IS HERITAGE DAY?

Heritage day is one of the newly created Public holiday in South Africa to celebrate our diverse cultures, traditions and beliefs. Heritage does not only mean our historical inheritance, creative expression and food but also embraces our various languages that have been entrenched in our cultural millieu. 

WHY IS HERITAGE DAY IMPORTANT?

Heritage is important because:

  • It reinforces the synergy between language and culture.
  • Recognises the different aspects of South African Culture.
  • Encourages South Africans all over the spectrum to celebrate their cultural heritage, the diversity of their beliefs as well as their different traditions.
  • To know our roots and where we are going.
HOW DO PEOPLE CELEBRATE THEIR HERITAGE?

  • People get dressed in their traditional attires.
  • They visit our heritage sites such as the museum.
  • For others it is a day for a Braai or even a get together where people cook their traditional dishes and have a feast.
DID YOU KNOW?

That the 24th of September was known as Shaka Day, in commemoration of the Zulu King Shaka.

READING AS A CULTURE

The National Book Week is a platform through which government, the book sector, media and civil society establish a partnership for making reading a culture. And with its call to action "READ A BOOK, SHARE A BOOK", the National Book Week will engage in reading activities for the young and the old. The activies include story telling, book clubs, puppet shows and book debates.

This initiave brought to you by the Department of Arts and Culture will play an important role in contributing to job creation, poverty reduction as well as skils development.

Minister of Arts and Culture Paul  Mashatile says that people
make reading a hobby which is why he says " I like this thing
of book clubs, because in the next few years we must get rid
of illiteracy in our countrry to ensure that everybody can read
and write."




THE KEY OBJECTIVES TO THE NATIONAL BOOK WEEK ARE: 

1. Promoting reading as part of South Africa's development.

2. Celebrating books as an instrument for reading, culture, heritage and economic progress.

3. Celebrating local literature.

4.Creating National awareness via various media channels.

5. Establishing and maintaining a book donation programme for schools and libraries.

6. Showcasing South African and African writers, publishers, book sellers and related businesses.


EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS SO BE SMART AND HELP REDUCE ILLITERACY IN OUR COUNTRY!

JAZZ ON THE LAKE

Jazz on the lake is one of the biggest annual events hosted at Zoo Lake in early September where Johannesburg  residents say goodbye  winter  and Hello Spring in song and dance .

This year the Jazz on the lake is bigger and better featuring international performers from France and India add on an interesting layer to the line up.

SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD MEDAL WINNERS
On the first day of the 2012 Summer olympics in London Le Clos finished fifth in the 400 meter individual medley. On the fourth day, Le Clos won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly in 1min 52.96 sec. h

Cameroon Van Der Burgh set a new world record for the men's 100 meter breaststroke. His record time 58,46 seconds shaved 0,12 seconds off the previous record of Australia's Brenton Rickard .

THE CLOSING CEREMONY 
The  London Olympics closing ceremony was held on the 12th of August 2012 to celebrate the sports feats of the athletes who have taken part in the game wit ultimate aftershow party.

This magnificent closing ceremony had many performances from the likes of :

  • London symphony orchestra
  • Pet shop boys
  • Spice girls
  • David Arnold
  • Electric light orchestra
And many many more artists.

NATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY


BRIEF HISTORY OF WOMEN'S DAY.

It was the 9th of August 1956, approximately 20 00 South African women from all races marched to the Union buildings in Pretoria to protest against pass laws of 1950. The women left the petition with more than 100 000 signatures at Prime minister J.G Strijdom door expressing their anger and frustrations which regards to the freedom of movement. The march was led by these four women: Helen Joseph, Lillian Ngoyi, Albertina Sisulu and Sophia Williams-De bruyn.

The woman stood in silence for about 30 minutes as a symbol for them to be taken seriously after that they sang protest songs such as " Wathinta abafazi, Wathinta ibhokodo" which means "you strike a women, you strike a rock and since that day this phrase has become important and seen as a symbol of the resilience of South African women and the their sacrifices in apartheid for non-racial and non-sexist South Africa.Read more

 WHY DO WE CELEBRATE WOMEN'S DAY?

There are many reasons why we as women of South Africa celebrate this day simply because the women of 1956 that petitioned against pass laws.

We celebrate women's day because:

  • We commemorate the women of 1956 who marched.
  • We honouring all the women of South Africa
  • We keeping the spirit of "you strike a woman, you strike a rock" alive.

On the eve of Women’s Day, women will hold a night vigil in memory of the 1956 March and in honour of the women who contributed to the attainment of freedom in our country. An interdenominational prayer and worship will be held in memory of all the heroines and women veterans who took part in the march.

If you want to go celebrate women's day there would be a night vigil at the City Hall in Tswane from the 8th at 18:00pm to the 9th at 06:oo am.

Mrs Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology will officially launch the National Science Week on the 28 of July 2012 at the University of Johannesburg and will be running from the 30th of July to the 4th of August 2012. This initiative is aimed at showing the young people of this country how important is science in our everyday lives ,to seek opportunities in the science field and to contribute in improving the economic growth as this years theme is "The role of science in economic development."

More than fifty organisations will be present at the launch and will be showing the role of science in their daily lives and the department has partnered wit the SABC radio and television to broadcast the event for those that will not be able to attend this event.
